How You Show Up When Someone Asks ChatGPT for a Recommendation

Ask ChatGPT for the best accountant in your city and it names two or three firms, not ten links. Here is how those systems decide who to recommend, and three things you can check this week.

Ask ChatGPT for the best accountant in your city and it will name two or three firms. It does not hand back ten links to sort through. It gives an answer, and most people stop reading there.

That is a different kind of search from the one businesses spent twenty years learning to rank in.

What AI search is

Three places now answer questions instead of listing results: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and the summary Google writes above its normal results. A growing share of people looking for a professional ask one of those first.

The questions are plain. Who is good. Who is nearby. Who handles this particular problem. The answer names businesses, and the names that appear get the call.

How it decides who to recommend

It is not paid placement and it is not random. These systems build an answer out of whatever they can find and verify about you. Three things carry most of the weight.

  • Your details agree everywhere. Your name, address, phone number and what you do, the same on your own website, your Google listing, and every directory you appear in. Find three versions of a phone number and a machine trusts none of them.
  • Other sources confirm you. Reviews, mentions, listings, professional bodies. One source saying you are good is an opinion. Six sources agreeing reads as a fact.
  • Your website answers the question. "We provide comprehensive solutions" cannot be quoted back to anybody. "We handle workers compensation claims in Georgia, and the deadline to file is one year from the date of injury" can be.

Three things you can check this week

  1. Ask about your field, not your firm. Open ChatGPT and ask for the best business doing what you do, where you do it. Do not mention your name. See who it names instead.
  2. Ask about you by name. Search your business and read what the summary says. If it is out of date or wrong, that is what your prospects are being told right now.
  3. Check your own phone number. Compare the number and address on your website against your Google listing, character for character. Suite numbers and abbreviations count.

None of those three needs anybody's help, and all three tell you something useful in ten minutes.

What we do about it

We test what the main AI systems say about a business today, across the questions its clients actually ask. Then we work through the same three things in order: make the details agree everywhere, build the outside confirmation, and rewrite the pages that matter so they answer questions directly instead of describing services in general terms. We re-test every quarter, because the answers move.

If you want to know what AI search says about your business today, book a call and we will show you.

The gap between you and the firm winning your market grows every day you don't close it.

The C4 Diagnostic™ takes under 3 minutes and shows you exactly where your competitor has the edge, across conversion, visibility, reviews, and AI search. Free. No sales call or credit card required to see your results.
