A Prospect Just Asked ChatGPT for a Recommendation. It Didn't Mention You.

Audit AI visibility, fix authority signal gaps, and strengthen your digital footprint so prospects are more likely to see your practice recommended.

A Prospect Just Asked ChatGPT for a Recommendation. It Didn't Mention You.

A prospect just opened ChatGPT and typed: "I'm looking for a personal injury lawyer in [your city]. Who do you recommend?"

ChatGPT responded with three names.

None of them were yours.

The prospect didn't search Google. Didn't check Yelp. Didn't ask a friend. They asked AI. And AI made a recommendation based on data you probably don't even know exists.

Last week, we showed you why the keywords you're optimizing for don't match how prospects actually search. This week, we're showing you a search revolution that makes keyword strategy look like a relic. AI search is here. It's already steering prospects toward your competitors. And most practices don't even know it's happening.

This is Week 4 of our 12-week CAPTURE series. We're deep in ATTRACT now, the second layer of CAPTURE. And nothing matters more in ATTRACT right now than AI search visibility.

The AI Search Disruption

Here's a number that should make you uncomfortable.

According to a 2026 B2B buyer report, 73.6% of B2B buyers use AI tools during their purchase research. That includes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude.

73.6%. More than 7 in 10 prospects are asking AI for recommendations before they ever visit your website.

Yet only 8.2% of professional service firms have any strategy for AI search visibility.

Your competitors aren't ahead of you. They just haven't noticed the cliff yet either. Everyone is standing on the same ground. But the ground is shifting. The firms that figure this out first will build an insurmountable advantage before the rest even wake up.

You can read more about how prospects use AI search tools in our earlier post. But the short version is this: Google search gives prospects a list of links. AI search gives prospects a recommendation. A list of links means you have 10 chances to be clicked. A recommendation means AI picked 3 names. If you're not one of them, you're invisible.

This is not a future trend. This is happening right now. Every day, prospects ask AI for recommendations. Every day, AI responds based on the data it can find about your practice. If that data is strong and consistent, AI recommends you. If that data is thin, inconsistent, or nonexistent, AI either ignores you or makes assumptions that don't favor you.

How AI Decides Who to Recommend

AI search engines don't work like Google. Google ranks pages. AI synthesizes information.

When someone asks ChatGPT "who's the best estate planning attorney in [city]," ChatGPT doesn't look at backlinks and page titles. It looks for patterns across multiple data sources. It pulls from your website content, your Google Business Profile, your reviews across platforms, your directory listings, your published articles, and your social media presence.

Then it synthesizes all of that into a recommendation. Three names. Maybe four. Based on which firms have the strongest, most consistent, most visible digital footprint.

Think of it like a background check. AI is checking your references before it ever recommends you. If your references are strong (lots of reviews, consistent information, helpful content, active online presence), AI feels confident recommending you. If your references are weak or contradictory, AI either skips you or hedges with vague language like "you may want to consider..."

Here's what AI looks for, in order of importance:

1. Review signals. Volume, recency, and sentiment. AI treats reviews as crowd-sourced credibility. A firm with 187 recent positive reviews looks like a safe recommendation. A firm with 12 reviews, the last one from 6 months ago, looks risky.

2. Content depth. Does your website answer the questions prospects ask? AI looks for FAQ content, educational articles, and service pages that demonstrate expertise. Thin content signals a thin practice. Deep content signals authority.

3. Structured data. This is the technical layer. Schema markup tells AI exactly what your business does, where you are, what services you offer, and what your reviews say. Without structured data, AI has to guess. And AI guesses conservatively. When in doubt, I don't recommend it.

4. NAP consistency. Your name, address, and phone number must match across every directory, every citation, every platform. One mismatch creates doubt. AI doesn't recommend firms it's not sure about.

5. Google Business Profile. This is the anchor. AI treats your GBP as the primary source of truth about your business. If your GBP is incomplete, outdated, or inactive, AI assumes your practice is too.

You can see how this connects to the invisible infrastructure killing your marketing ROI. The same signals that Google uses for local ranking are the signals AI uses for recommendations. Fix them once. Benefit across every search platform.

How to Audit Your AI Visibility

This takes 5 minutes. It might be the most important 5 minutes you spend this week.

Step 1: Search ChatGPT.

Open ChatGPT. Type: "I'm looking for a [your specialty] in [your city]. Who do you recommend and why?"

Read the response carefully. Were you mentioned? If yes, what did AI say about you? If not, which competitors were recommended? What did AI say about them?

Step 2: Search Perplexity.

Perplexity is an AI search engine that pulls real-time web data. It's often more current than ChatGPT because it searches the live web. Type the same query.

Compare the results. Are the same firms recommended in both? Or does each AI tool recommend different firms? The overlap tells you who has the strongest cross-platform visibility.

Step 3: Search Google AI Overviews.

Google now shows AI-generated summaries at the top of search results for many queries. Search for your primary service plus your city. If an AI Overview appears, read it. Who does Google's AI recommend? What information does it pull?

Step 4: Compare to your top competitor.

Do the same searches but replace your city with a competitor's name. If AI recommends your competitor and not you, the gap isn't about expertise. It's about digital footprint. Your competitor has stronger signals. You have weaker ones.

Write down what you find. This is your AI visibility baseline. Everything you fix from this point forward should be aimed at closing the gap between what AI says about your competitor and what it says (or doesn't say) about you.

What to Fix First

If your AI visibility is weak, here's the priority order for fixing it.

1. Structured data markup. This is the highest-leverage fix because it helps AI understand your site. Add schema markup for your business type, services, reviews, and FAQ. If AI can't parse your site, it can't recommend you. This is technical, but it's a one-time fix that pays dividends across every AI platform.

2. FAQ content. AI loves FAQ content because it's structured in question-and-answer format. That's exactly how AI processes and retrieves information. Write FAQs that answer the natural language questions prospects ask. "How much does a consultation cost?" "What should I bring to my first appointment?" "How long does the process take?" Use your prospects' words, not industry jargon.

3. Review volume and recency. Reviews are the #1 signal AI uses to assess credibility. You need volume (50+ reviews minimum), recency (new reviews at least monthly), and consistent positive sentiment. If you're at 12 reviews and your competitor is at 187, that gap alone could explain why AI recommends them and not you. We cover the full review generation system in Week 8 of this series, but start asking satisfied clients for reviews today.

4. NAP consistency. Audit your name, address, and phone number across Google, Yelp, Avvo, Healthgrades, your website, and any directory where your practice appears. One mismatch is enough to create doubt in AI's assessment. Fix every inconsistency you find.

5. Content that directly answers "who is the best [your service] near me." AI looks for content that positions you as a top choice. Comparison pages, "Why Choose Us" pages, and case study content all help AI understand why you should be recommended. If your site doesn't make the case for you, AI won't make it for you.

The Early Mover Advantage

Here's why this matters right now. Not next quarter. Not next year. Right now.

AI search is where Google SEO was in 2005. The firms that invested early built authority that compounded for 15+ years. By the time everyone else caught on, the early movers had an insurmountable lead.

The same thing is happening with AI search. The firms that optimize their digital footprint for AI recommendation today will build the authority signals that AI relies on. Those signals compound. The more AI recommends you, the more confident it becomes in that recommendation. The more confident it is, the more it recommends you. It's a feedback loop.

The firms that wait will find themselves in the same position as firms that started SEO in 2015 instead of 2005. Not impossible to catch up. But exponentially harder and more expensive.

According to the same 2026 B2B buyer report, 73.6% of buyers use AI in their research process. That number will be 90%+ within 18 months. The window for early mover advantage is open. It's narrowing.

👉 You don't need to be the best at AI search optimization. You need to be the first in your market. That's the advantage. First beats best when best is invisible.

You can see how AI visibility fits into the complete CAPTURE system on our CAPTURE hub page. It's one piece of ATTRACT, working alongside local SEO, content strategy, and reviews.

The CAPTURE Score Mini-Assessment

How AI-visible is your practice?

1. Have you searched for your practice by name in ChatGPT or Perplexity? Yes = 1 point. No = 0 points.

2. Did AI mention you when you searched for "best [your service] in [your city]"? Yes = 1 point. No = 0 points.

3. Does your website use structured data (schema markup) that AI can parse? Yes = 1 point. No = 0 points.

4. Do you have FAQ content answering natural language questions about your services? Yes = 1 point. No = 0 points.

Score 0: AI doesn't know you exist. Every AI recommendation in your market goes to competitors.

Score 1: AI found you but the information is thin. It knows your name but can't confidently recommend you.

Score 2-3: You have partial AI visibility. AI knows about you but doesn't recommend you first. Competitors with stronger signals are winning.

Score 4: You're AI-optimized. AI recommends you. Your job now is to maintain and expand that position.

CAPTURE Myths

Myth: "AI recommendations are random. You can't control what ChatGPT says about you."

Truth: AI pulls from structured data sources: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your directory listings, and your content. If those sources are strong and consistent, AI recommends you. If they're weak or inconsistent, AI either ignores you or makes assumptions that don't favor you. You absolutely can influence what AI says. Most practices just haven't been tried.

This Week's Action Item

This takes 3 minutes. Do it before you finish reading this post.

Open ChatGPT. Type: "I'm looking for a [your specialty] in [your city]. Who do you recommend and why?"

Read the response.

Now do the same in Perplexity.

Compare what both say about you vs. your top competitor.

That gap is your priority fix list for the next 30 days. Structured data. FAQ content. Reviews. NAP consistency. Content that positions you as a top choice.

Every day you wait, AI gets more confident in recommending your competitors. Every day you wait, the feedback loop gets stronger for them and weaker for you.

What's Coming Next

Next week, we're going local. We'll show you why the Google Map Pack is worth more than page 1 of Google search results. Being #1 on page 1 but missing the map pack means you're losing to firms ranked below you. Week 5 will show you the 7-factor Google Business Profile audit that drives map pack dominance.

We'll also be going deeper on all of this in our live workshop, "CAPTURE: Fill Your Pipeline With Qualified Prospects" on November 4. We'll share registration details as we get closer. We'll walk through live AI visibility audits during the session so you can see exactly what AI says about your practice in real time.
